Garnets are found in many colours, but deep red is the colour we are most likely to think of and red garnets are most frequently made into jewellery. The name 'Garnet' comes from the Latin word for 'seed', because the shape, size and colour of most stones found are reminiscent of pomegranate seeds.

In traditional Hindu Vedic philosophy, garnets are linked with the first or 'root' chakra, believed to be located at the base of the spine. Other traditions have considered it to have properties associated with blood and circulation. The stone has been linked to safe travel and it has been called the 'Traveller's Stone'.
